Spectrum of Serious Neurological and Psychiatric Adverse Events in Indian COVID-19 Vaccine Recipients: A Systematic Review of Case Reports and Case Series
Neurol India. 2023 Mar-Apr;71(2):209-227. doi: 10.4103/0028-3886.375420.ABSTRACTIndian data regarding serious neurological and psychiatric adverse events, following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination, are lacking. We, therefore, systematically evaluated cases of post-vaccinal serious neurological and psychiatric adverse reactions published from India. A systematic review of cases published from India, which were archived in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases, was performed; pre-print databases along with ahead-of-print contents were searched in addition. Retrieved articles, as on June 27, 2022, were ...

Prevention of Herpes Zoster: A Focus on the Effectiveness and Safety of Herpes Zoster Vaccines
Viruses. 2022 Nov 29;14(12):2667. doi: 10.3390/v14122667.ABSTRACTInfection with varicella zoster virus typically occurs in children and it can cause primary varicella infection or "chickenpox", or it can reactivate later in life and cause herpes zoster or "shingles". Herpes zoster mainly occurs in older adults, causing a reduction in activities of daily living, impacting quality of life, and may lead to serious complications, including chronic pain. Two vaccines are marketed to prevent herpes zoster: the live zoster vaccine and the non-live, recombinant zoster vaccine. The pre-licensure clinical trials show the efficacy of...

Trigeminal neuropathy after tozinameran vaccination against COVID-19 in postmicrovascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia: illustrative case
J Neurosurg Case Lessons. 2022 Apr 18;3(16):CASE22101. doi: 10.3171/CASE22101. Print 2022 Apr 18.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Vaccines against coronavirus disease 2019 have a high level of efficacy and safety across all populations. However, numerous case series have been published on neurological disorders, including Bell's palsy, Guillain-Barre syndrome, transverse myelitis, and multiple sclerosis. The authors presented a case of trigeminal neuropathy after coronavirus vaccination in a patient who had undergone microvascular decompression (MVD) for trigeminal neuralgia (TN).OBSERVATIONS: A 77-year-old woman presented with acute t...

Active Post-Licensure Safety Surveillance for Recombinant Zoster Vaccine Using Electronic Health Record Data
Am J Epidemiol. 2022 Oct 4:kwac170. doi: 10.1093/aje/kwac170. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) (Shingrix; GlaxoSmithKline, Brentford, United Kingdom) is an adjuvanted glycoprotein vaccine that was licensed in 2017 to prevent herpes zoster and its complications in older adults. In this prospective, post-licensure Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) study using electronic health records, we sequentially monitored a real-world population of adults aged 50 years and older who received care at multiple VSD health systems in the United States to identify potential increased risks of 10 pre-specified prior...

Recurrence of Herpetic Keratitis after COVID-19 Vaccination: A Report of Two Cases
CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 vaccines work by generating both adaptive humoral and cellular immune responses in humans, including elevation of anti-spike neutralizing antibody titers, antigen-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell responses, and increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as interferon gamma (IFNγ). The general activation of the T-cell-mediated immune response and proinflammatory cytokines such as IFNγ may underlie the role of the COVID vaccines in reactivation of herpetic stromal keratitis and the clinical findings in our reported cases.PMID:35601874 | PMC:PMC9121224 | DOI:10.1155/2022/7094893

Projected risks and health benefits of vaccination against herpes zoster and related complications in US adults
Hum Vaccin Immunother. 2022 Apr 27:1-5. doi: 10.1080/21645515.2022.2060668. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) to prevent against herpes zoster (HZ) and related complications in immunocompetent adults ≥50 y and immunocompromised adults ≥19 y. In 2019, a statistical safety signal for Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) following RZV was identified using data from the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD). Subsequently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and collaborators under...

Neuro-Ophthalmological Complications of the COVID-19 Vaccines: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSION: Since the implementation of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign in the past year, several post-COVID-vaccination neuro-ophthalmological complications have been described. However, considering the number of individuals that have been exposed to the vaccines, the risk seems very low, and the clinical outcome in most cases is favorable. Therefore, on a population level, the benefits of the vaccines far outweigh the risk of neuro-ophthalmological complications.PMID:35427282 | DOI:10.1097/WNO.0000000000001537
